Welcome to the blog. So why don't you run at your mom's house? Running is great every day.

On the side cramp issue, I like to yell when I am having a cramp. I am not sure if it helps, but it seems to help for me. Also part of running (especially 5k's) is to make peace with pain, to accept pain and to not run any slower for it. If you know the cramp will leave just tell yourself "It's going to hurt for one minute, maybe two, and then it will go away. But I won't slow down!"

From adamr on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:48:09

on the discussion board there is a lot of responses to how to get rid of cramps. take a look over there and that might help.

From Dave S on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:27:47

Hi Bryson, I see you joined the blog. You should try a little running at your moms house. A little bit every day goes a long way.

From melosh on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:49:32

From melosh on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 11:51:27

I accidentaly made this letter thing too long.

From Dave S on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 12:43:17

Bryson, you should write about your Ogden 5K race. Go to May 17th and check the box that says race report. I have been trying to call you.

From Lucia on Wed, May 28, 2008 at 19:57:25

Bryson,

Sorry about your cramps! I used to get them all the time. Here are two things that helped me get rid of them. First, not eating for at least an hour before I go for a run. Second, when you run and you're getting the cramps, breathe really deep "into" the cramp - as if you were trying to inflate your belly really big, pretending you were pregnant (breathe into your abdomen instead of into your chest). I hope this helps! Good luck with your 5 k's!

Welcome to the blog! Have you seen Napolean Dynamite up there? Just kiddin' My wife is from Lewiston, Ut and has alot of history up there. Her dad still owns land in preston and franklin area. Keep up the good work

From JohnA on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 00:27:59

I see you were asking about side aches.

Generally, if your side ache is on the left side, then it is your stomach that is hurting. Make sure you wait long enough after eating.

On the right side which is probally the side you get the cramp on, it is breathing problems. That comes on because you are GOING TOO FAST, and you are not use to going that fast. 11 year olds zoom at the first and then slow down when they get tired and hurting. Try starting slow and then if you feel pretty good after a while, then speed up. If you ever feel the cramp coming on, SLOW DOWN, breath deep and relax your tummy (do belly breaths).

As you get in better shape, then you can go faster and not cramp.

Eat your bananas too (potassium)

Good luck

From Jon on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:40:28

for cramps you raise you arms and belly breath, push your stomach out as you breath in. Welcome to the blog, KEEP RUNNING!!!

From melosh on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:00:20

Thank you for the advice.

From Debbie on Sat, May 31, 2008 at 00:36:00

I think your breathing is too shallow. Try breathing deeper down to your belly, at first it will get worse then it should reside.

Welcome to the blog. I also do baseball and basketball too. It is great that there is another 11 year old kid on the blog. You asked on stomach aches. You shouldn't eat dairy or junkfood. Dont eat to much, or drink too much gatorade or water. I usually just have a peice of toast with honey. You should come do some races in Utah. We have a State Track Meet on Thursday the 26th thru Saturday the 28th in Salt Lake, and runners from southern Idaho can come I think. We also have kids cross-country races in the fall, that are 3ks. Keep up the good running.

I ran five miles today in running club and I did so good that my coach said that I can run a the meets cause I got second getting back and I think It's because of that runners oatmeal I got from Saint  George at the expo.  I also beat all the kids that only ran 4 miles instead of five so I'm problably going to have a meet on wenesday.  I better eat some of that oatmeal for breakfast.  And I ran with the kid that ran the fastest mile in p.e last year, he ran it in 6:12!

I got new shoes just in time for the first dam 5k run in logan UT.  I ran today but I had to stop a lot cause  I'm sore from doing 80 pushups in p.e. and running around playing capture the flag sprinting.  What I hate is that the race is the day after halloween so I can't eat very much candy that night!  My dads still kind of sore from the St. George marathon so he's just going to run with me on the course.

I set my new pr in a 5k today 28:36 I thought I ran pretty hard.  I didn't feel to good a couple of times so I had to stop but I still ran the whole rest of the way with my dad. Right before I crossed the finish line there was a lady in front of me so I just took of sprinting and there was a lady behind me trying to pass me right whene I took of and she told me that and I felt pretty good about myself.  Afterwards I looked at the age groups and I got second.  When we were waiting to get my award we met John and Cody.  My dad hurried to get the camera out of the car but he was to late but he took my picture of me holding up my ribbon so I had a good time.  My shoes worked out really good, it was the first time to run in them.  Tey're awsome

Hey, congrats on your race. That's a pretty sweet time for a kid your age. I'm trying to remember what I ran 5ks in when I was a young'n like you, but I'm not sure. Just wait and see, I bet we'll read about your races in the Herald Journal in a few more years when you're in high school.

ps- glad you like the new shoes. Always fun to get a new pair.
